A boy named George Jung grows up in a struggling family in the 1950's.
His mother nags at her husband as he is trying to make a living for the family.
It is finally revealed that George's father cannot make a living and the family goes bankrupt.
George does not want the same thing to happen to him, and his friend Tuna, in the 1960's, suggests that he deal marijuana.
He is a big hit in California in the 1960's, yet he goes to jail, where he finds out about the wonders of cocaine.
As a result, when released, he gets rich by bringing cocaine to America.
However, he soon pays the price.

In Indonesia: Erin Gruwell mengajar di SMA Woodrow Wilson di Long Beach, California. Sekolah ini termasuk sekolah yang menerapkan sistem integrasi sukarela (voluntarily integrated), namun tidak berhasil. Murid-muridnya terdiri dari campuran ras seperti Asia, kulit hitam, latin, dan sedikit kulit putih yang terkenal malas belajar dan berkelompok-kelompok. Masing-masing kelompok saling melindungi dan sering terlibat dalam kekerasan antar geng. Tidak banyak guru atau pelajar yang pergi ke sekolah. Ini mirip seperti gudang untuk pelajar sampai mereka drop out atau dipecat.
Dengan latar belakang ini, seorang guru idealis datang untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris di kelas baru. Ia seorang terpelajar, cantik, dari golongan kelas menengah, tidak rasis, berpenampilan menarik, dan pintar. Di hari pertama mengajar, ia mendapati kelasnya berantakan. Murid-muridnya cuek. Satu sama lain saling mengejek dan bermusuhan. Suasananya tidak sesuai dengan yang diharapkan. Kemudian ia dapati kerusuhan di luar kelas. Terjadi tembak menembak. Dengan suasana seperti ini wajar jika banyak guru yang tidak betah dan menyerah. Mereka lebih baik mengundurkan diri daripada harus menjadi bagian dari “gudang pelajar”.
Namun sikap idealistiknya berbicara lain. Ia tidak menyerah. Erin perlahan tapi pasti mulai mengajar dan pelajaran pertama yang dia ajarkan adalah tentang “rasa sakit” yang dialami murid-muridnya. Kemudian ia meyakinkan murid-muridnya untuk menuliskan apa saja tentang rasa sakit dan kesulitan hidup dalam buku harian mereka, dan kemudian mendiskusikan buku harian tersebut dengan dirinya. Ia juga melakukan pendekatan kepada murid-muridnya yang terdiri dari 4 kelompok etnis dengan cara mendiskusikan tentang kesenangan mereka seperti musik, film, keratakan rumah tangga, dan keretakan hubungan mereka dengan komunitasnya. Tentu saja dengan pendekatan bermain dan belajar, seperti permainan garis maju-mundur.
Sementara ia berjuang keras dengan murid-muridnya, pada saat yang sama ia juga dihadapkan pada masalah pelik hubungan dengan keluarganya. Suaminya Scott Casey (diperankan Patrick Dempsey) disatu sisi sangat mendukung, tapi disisi lain sangat cemburu dengan aktifitas istrinya yang banyak menyita waktu keluarga. Erin akhirnya ditinggalkan suaminya yang memilih bercerai. Sementara ayahnya, Steve Gruwell (diperankan Scott Glenn) sangat kecewa dengan pilihan karir anaknya, namun sangat bangga dengan keberanian dan dedikasinya.
